B  Adams feared tyranny with only one group in power. The three separate branches of government are the executive, legislative, and judicial.

C  We have checks and balances plus three separate branches of government? Does Adams know?

D  Adams wanted to keep things as they were in England. NYC, Washington DC, and Philadelphia are the three branches of government.

A  They opposed the 1787 Constitution because it was written in haste and kept in old laws that were outdated from England. The solution was editing the document and sending it out to each state for a 3/4ths vote approval.

B  They opposed the 1787 Constitution because it gave too many rights to the poor. The solution was the 1st Amendment.

C  They opposed the 1787 Constitution because it seemed a dangerous concentration of centralized power that threatened the rights and liberties of ordinary citizens. The solution was the Bill of Rights.

A  The successful overthrow of French colonizers meant that Napoleon had to personally pay each enslaved person reparations totally $250,00 in today’s money to each person. He was then forced to sell the Louisiana Purchase to the US so that he could afford to pay these reparations.

B  Historians disagree regarding these events, but some believe that Napoleon felt that he had personally been defeated when French colonizers were overthrown and he desired to build his power-base from then on only in France.

C  Since black enslaved people in the French colony of Haiti had successfully overthrown the brutal plantation regime, Napoleon could no longer hope to restore the empire lost with France’s defeat in the French and Indian War. His vision of the area as the source for food for Haiti had failed.

D  South Carolina passed a new slave code in 1740 known as the Negro Act of 1740, which imposed new limits on enslave peoples’ behavior. This meant that many of them moved into regions like the Louisiana Purchase, which led Napoleon to sell it.
