A moth living in the forests of England has a white and black variety within the population. At one time, the trees were of a lighter color and the white moth could blend in the background of the tree. The birds had difficulty seeing the white colored moth on the lighter colored trees; therefore, few were eaten. The black colored moth was more visible on the light background of the trees and was eaten by birds more readily. When the industrial revolution sprang up in England, pollution caused the color of trees to be darkened because of all the soot being released into the air by factories. As a result, the white moth did not blend in so well, while the black colored moth had a better time of blending into the background of the trees since it was darker.
