Question #2
The Big Storm
Kyle looked up at the sky. It was the brightest blue, as far as he could see, absent of a single cloud. He felt a very gentle breeze on his skin, warmed by the strong rays of the sun. He figured it was the perfect day to go canoeing. He ran inside the house to call his friends, and he told them to meet him at the lake. He ran back outside, hopped on his bike, and rode a mile to the park on Cayuga Lake, where he stored his canoe.
“Hey guys!” Kyle yelled out when he saw Jamie and Aliya. They waved as they rode their bikes closer.
“I’m so excited to get out there!” Aliya said, as she and Jamie locked their bikes to a rack near the shore.
The three of them lugged the large red canoe from a shed to the water’s edge. They could hardly wait to start paddling. Jamie climbed in the front, and Aliya followed while Kyle held the canoe steady. Once they were all balanced, Kyle jumped in, sat in the back, and handed an oar to Jamie.
They decided to paddle against the current first, so that when they had to come back to shore, it would be easier on their arms. They paddled in silence for a while, taking in the beautiful surroundings. They waved to those they passed by on other boats, and they were soon far from shore.
“Wait, guys, do you see that?” Jamie asked all of a sudden. Aliya and Kyle looked off into the distance to where he was pointing. They saw it at the same time—a big, dark, gray cloud hurling toward them at a threatening speed. Five minutes later, they felt the first drops of rain. The fast approach of a storm was not rare in upstate New York, where the weather could change many times in a single day. But none of the three had ever been out on the water during a storm.
“I think we should head back to shore, guys,” said Aliya. She was growing worried that they would get turned over by the strong winds.
“Good idea,” Kyle and Jamie said in unison. But when they began to paddle back, they realized that they were far away from where they had originally pushed off into the water. They spotted some land closer to where they were, but they had never been to that part of the lake before.
“I think it’s just better that we reach land; we’ll figure out what to do once we get somewhere safe,” Kyle said. So the three furiously paddled toward the shore that was quickly disappearing behind gathering fog. Their arms ached from pulling on the oars, but they wanted to beat the weather. Finally, they hit the pebbly sand. They climbed out and dragged the canoe onto land.
The three checked out their surroundings. The storm had hit, and the rain was coming down hard. Jamie could make out a small, white house further up on the hill on which they had landed. Since they hadn’t brought cell phones, they couldn’t call their families, so they decided they needed to either wait out the storm or approach the house. “I think my family might actually know the people who live here; this area looks a bit familiar,” Jamie said.
Jamie, with Kyle and Aliya trailing behind, timidly walked up to the house and knocked on the door. A woman answered. She had long, brown hair that fell to her waist, and a wide smile that greeted the three as they looked up at her. “Well, hello, how can I help you?” she asked. Jamie introduced himself, mentioned his parents, and said that they were stranded when the storm came along.
“Oh, you’re the Wilsons’ son? Please come in! We’ll call your parents right away,” the woman said. The three dripping friends breathed sighs of relief. As they stood on the welcome mat inside the house, they heard the woman on the phone, telling Jamie’s mom that they were safe and waiting for her to come pick them up.
