Topic: Essay on Eduard Manet’s Olympia
Instruction:
Looking at these two images, Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with The Pearl Earring, 1665, and Eduard Manet’s Olympia, we are confronted with the central figure’s piercing gaze. How and why is this significant and how is the gaze used differently within each image? Are these female figure’s sexualized, or not? And if not, what exactly is the artist trying to communicate about their female identities? Consider the use of color and line. For example, in Olympia, there is a diagonal line leading down her arm to the lower part of her body, and a line bisecting the painting, literally cutting it in half. How and why is this significant? Please use Chicago Manual of style. Must be 1000 words or more and have 3 or more citations from credible sources.
