Topic: Essay on One Writer’s Beginnings
Instruction:
Based on Eudora Welty’s essay “One Writer’s Beginnings” in PDF format within the Week One Module or on page 565 of The Norton Reader, Shorter Edition.
Directions: Write an essay of 3-5 pages containing the following elements:
–Introductory paragraph (or two)
–Thesis statement
–Supporting paragraphs (as many as it takes; preferably 4-5) with topic sentences and supporting evidence based on your own experiences, your own observations or perceptions, and/or Welty’s essay, quoting using the MLA format (see Hacker’s A Writer’s Reference, MLA Papers, pp. 369-440).
–Concluding paragraph restating the thesis and adding some profound, thoughtful final idea.
Prompt:
In describing her reading of classic tales from Every Child’s Story Book, Eudora Welty notes: “I located myself in these pages and could go straight to the stories and pictures I loved” (paragraph 12). If you have had a similar experience with stories or books, write an essay about it. If your experience with books was quite different, that, too, will provide the subject of an essay. Please do not analyze Welty’s essay; you need to write about your own experiences with reading. Also, please do not write a story about your life; you need to frame this paper in essay format, using a thesis statement, topic sentences, and supporting examples.
